Joe Coughlin
If his friendly face looks familiar to you, Joe’s first job at Rombauer was in the Sierra Foothills tasting room, where he spent weekends sharing the Joy of Wine with our guests. When he wasn’t pouring wine for us, he was making it elsewhere. From the tasting room, he moved to production as the cellar master, where he proved his passion and leadership through harvest and more.
As our winemaker based in the Foothills, Joe will be integral in making our Zinfandel, Barbera, and Solera. He will lead the production team, including the many interns who arrive each year, eager to learn about the quintessential American grape variety, Zinfandel, from some of the best.
We asked Joe a few questions so read on to get to know him. We’re so happy for his promotion! Please join us to say Bravo to Joe!
Tell us about Fiddletown Zinfandel
This is my personal favorite of all our Zins. Every time I taste it, the wine tells me an ever-changing story as its flavors and aromas are constantly developing in the glass. With vines ranging in age from 50 to over 100 years old, this wine highlights the delicate complexity and maturity of Old Vine Zinfandel.
Tell us about Twin Rivers Zinfandel
My favorite aspects of this wine are the holiday spice aromas and flavors which are beautifully balanced with the rich blackberry and dark cherry fruit notes. It is a powerful example of Zinfandel. If I am honest, I tend to drink this one all by itself, but it’s also delicious with braised short ribs.
What is your Favorite Rombauer wine not from the Sierra Foothills?
If I must choose, it would be our Single Vineyard Atlas Peak Cabernet Sauvignon. The intensity and elegance of this wine are to me the ultimate expression of a beautiful, powerful Napa Cabernet.
Insider Tip for Amador?
The Foothills were the heart of the California Gold Rush and there is such great history here. We have wonderful small towns, outdoor recreational opportunities, and of course, amazing wines!
