Ed Boyce & Sarah O'Herron
Proprietors, Black Ankle Vineyards

Black Ankle Vineyards is the culmination of a long-time dream of founders Ed Boyce and Sarah O'Herron. Former management consultants, their love of all things food and wine led them to decide back in 2000 to leave their lives of offices, airports, and spreadsheets to try their luck at digging in the dirt. After many years of twists, turns, and bumps in the road along the way, Black Ankle Vineyards is the result of that decision. After a long search for the perfect property, they settled on Black Ankle's current location in Mount Airy, Maryland, planting the first vines in 2003 and 2004. After intensive study of winemaking and the proper way to hand tend the vines, Ed and Sarah had their first harvest in 2006 and subsequently opened their tasting room with their first bottles of wine in 2008. Since then, they have sought to create a memorable experience for their customers whether they visit the vineyard itself or experience Black Ankle wines elsewhere. Ed and Sarah have recently purchased three new farms, with the idea of expanding the amount of wine available for Black Ankle Vineyards and of creating a new sales and tasting space. One of the new locations, which they are calling Live Edge Vineyards, is tucked away in Clarksburg, MD. They are currently working on building the tasting room there and if all goes well, will be able to welcome visitors in 2026. In the meantime, the vineyards are already producing grapes and there are a few sneak preview wines in the bottle.
